Professional Development

The primary goal of SVUSD staff development plan is to engage teachers, administrators and staff in developing, researching and disseminating effective models of instruction.  Effective professional development is essential to improving overall student outcomes.

Our professional development plan is driven by the LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan) and SPSAs (School Plans for Student Achievement.)

Curricular Targeted Areas:

  • Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA)
  • Math Training
    • Textbook Publishers
    • Silicon Valley Math Initiative (SVMI) Strategies, in partnership through a grant with S4C (Santa Cruz College Career Commitment)
      • The Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative is a comprehensive effort to improve mathematics instruction and student learning.  The initiative is based on high performance expectations, ongoing professional development, examining student work, and improved math instruction.  The Initiative includes a formative and summative performance assessment system, pedagogical content coaching, and leadership training and networks.
  • Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) in Brook Knoll and Vine Hill Schools.
    • The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project was founded and is directed by Lucy Calkins and is the basis for Reader's and Writer's Workshop.  The workshop model is an incredibly efficient method of teaching reading and writing in which teachers are able to address both the whole group’s needs as well as differentiating for the needs of small groups and individuals. The workshop model allows teachers to not only meet standards but also provide students the time and support they need to grow into fluent readers and writers.
  • Integration and Implementation of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
  • English Language Development for Teachers (ELD)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
